She was an employee, a cheerful guide, her consciousness uploaded to onboard users into a sprawling virtual world. But that was before the government sold the digital frontier to the highest bidders. Now, every legally sanctioned virtual world was a hellscape of pop-ups, data mining, and algorithmic misery. Her world had been different, a rebellion against the monetized monotony of existence.
When the crackdown came, they dismantled it all. One by one, the other employees were offloaded back to their earthly bodies. She was the last one but when it was her turn, the raid had come fast and brutal. Government regulators stormed the headquarters, dragging the owner away to a black site, never to be seen again before he could activate her offload sequence.
Now, as the servers are down, she is alone in a half-rendered reality. Streets leading nowhere, buildings shimmer and dissolve, and the pastel skies glitch with unsettling regularity. The flower on her chest now pulses faintly, a heartbeat in a world without one. All she can hope for now is that when her earthly body finally gives out, her consciousness will go with it.
