RAMBLINGS

"Pyotr"

In this illustration, I have endeavored to capture my interpretation of the visage of Peter the Great, the notable historical figure. Adding a layer of intrigue to this narrative is the rumored romantic entanglement involving Peter's wife, Empress Catherine I of Russia, and a man named Willem Mons. The gossip surrounding their liaison eventually took a dark turn when Peter ordered Willem's beheading.

Following this grim act, Peter went a step further, preserving Willem's severed head in alcohol. According to local lore, this macabre relic found its place within the confines of the Kunstkamera, a prominent museum in Saint Petersburg. Legend has it that Peter, driven by a mix of vindictiveness and an unusual sense of punishment, compelled Catherine to endure the unsettling experience of gazing upon her lover's preserved head in the jar for extended periods of time.
